Students can access their  EPEARL portfolios by logging in from here. ***Check below to make sure that you have your portfolio complete for your student-led conference!

Goals of using EPEARL for our learning portfolios:

  • As we integrate I.C.T. into our course work, students will be able to reflect on their own work as well as invite meaningful feedback from their peers.
  • Students can give meaningful feedback to their peers when work is shared with them.
  • Parents can track their child’s learning; and become actively involved in their child’s education through the provision of feedback on work once it is stored within their child’s portfolio.
  • Students will have a concise, portable archive of their learning from grade six.

> Parents:  For tips on how to help your child with their portfolio, and for suggestions about comments to leave in the portfolio, go to the EPEARL Tips.  (This is a Word document - if you have difficulties opening it, let me know and I will print you a copy.)

On your home page, make sure that you include:

  • Goal statements for each of your courses.
  • A welcome message which:
-welcomes the visitor to your portfolio
-introduces you (your name and interests)
-talks about your school life (teacher's name, grade, responsibilities and things that you like about grade 6)
-introduces your portfolio (continue to update this throughout the year.)
-something that you are particularly proud of in your portfolio (again, update this as the year progresses)

    • Fairy Tale

    • Personal Choice (focus on "Idea Development" & "Showing Details")

      • Writing Traits: Idea Development
I used a balance of showing and telling.
My details try to paint a picture in the reader’s head.
I took a unique approach when writing about this topic.
I stayed on topic throughout the entire writing.
My theme/message is clear to my reader.

        Writing Traits: Organization
My introduction grabs the reader’s attention.
My conclusion links back to my introduction.
I used transition words to move from idea to idea.
My title stands for my entire draft, not just a part of it.

      •

    • Olympics Poem

      • Olympic Poem Strategies
We brainstormed Olympic words and watched some clips of Olympic athletes practicing & talking about the sport in order to generate ideas & words for our poems. We also looked at different types of poems & samples from handouts. We shared our poems with the teacher and our peers to get feedback.

    • "New Year's Day" Poem

  • French:

    • Comment y aller - artifact & reflection to go along with showcase portfolio work

  • Reading:

    • Lit Circles Work

    • Make sure that you include some of the goals & strategies that you used during your lit circle work. For example, a goal would be that you wanted to share your ideas & opinions about what was taking place in the novel that you were studying. So, a strategy was to make sure that you read the required pages before each lit circle discussion, keep a detailed bookmark, complete your role sheets, and participate in the discussions. Your reflection should be based on how well you, personally, and your group collaborated in order to have effective discussions & to put together and deliver an effective showcase presentation.

  • Art:

    • 2 pt. perspective - street scene

    • Comment y aller comic

      • Strategies that we used for creating the comic strip:

        • We created the characters in a few different positions so that they kept a consistent look from one panel to the next. We included backgrounds on the panels to show setting. We limited the dialogue to fit in the comic strip panel. We tried to add a few creative / unique touches to make it humorous.
We traced over with a Sharpie at the end to make it stand out & to clean up any mistakes that we made with our pencil.

  • Health:

    • 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

      • Strategies for your 7 Habits Flip Book:
        1. Look at the 7 Habits of "Defective" Teens (ie: what behaviours / attitudes are not very helpful for moving us forward.)
        2. Look at the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and how they relate to us at school.
        3. Write about how we saw the habits (defective & effective) at work in the characters' lives of the books that we have read, as well as in our own lives.
        4.  Share your ideas with one another.

EPEARL Tips to Students
***Make sure that you fill out all areas of your EPEARL artifact.
>The Reflection is very important because it is here that you examine how well you met the goals for the task and how well you met the established criteria. Consider how you could successfully accomplish a similar task in the future.
>Share your artifacts with some friends and give feedback on other students’ EPEARL portfolios.  **Remember to give legitimate praise & constructive criticism in order to help your peers to IMPROVE their work.
